520 2 _aThe Arthur Tièche Watchmaking Student's Notebooks consist of four notebooks kept by Arthur Tièche while studying watchmaking at Uhrmacherschule Solothurn (today ZeitZentrum). They contain extensive manuscript notes in German about watchmaking theory and include diagrams, calculations, and test questions. The largest of the four volumes additionally contains notes about mathematics and a set of accounts tracking Tièche's finances.
545 0 _aArthur Tièche attended Uhrmacherschule Solothurn in Switzerland between 1923 and 1926. Little else is known about his life or career but the Tièche family was prominent in the watchmaking industry. Some notable members of the Tièche family include Emmanuel-Aimé Tièche, who in 1853 founded the Reconvilier Watch Company, and Lucien Tièche, who was appointed as the general manager of the Langendorf Watch Company in 1890 and later founded the Roamer brand. It is likely that Arthur Tièche was related to the other watchmaking Tièches but the precise nature of that relationship is not known.
545 1 _aUhrmacherschule Solothurn is a watchmaking school that opened in Solothurn, Switzerland in 1884. The watchmaking industry boomed after the Second World War and Uhrmacherschule remained prosperous until the 1970s when the success of quartz movements forced the shuttering of much of the traditional watchmaking industry in Solothurn. Uhrmacherschule remained in business, however, and since 1976 has been the only watchmaking school in German-speaking Switzerland. In 2002 it relocated to Grenchen, Switzerland, and is now known as ZeitZentrum.
