Austrian and Hungarian history meet at Forchtenstein Castle, the "safe" of the treasures of the Esterházy princes. Owned by the lordship of the same name since 1626, the Esterházy Castle has had a significant impact on Forchtenstein. Today it is the headquarters of one of the most important collections in Central Europe: from the Gothic altar to the Turkish tent, from filigree art and cabinet of curiosities objects to the largest private armory and armoury collection in Europe, from wondrous ancestral portraits to magnificent silver furniture. The comprehensive publication leads through the eventful 700-year history of the complex - from the keep to the chapel, through the kitchen and wine cellar, through the treasury and ancestral gallery, but also through the prison and armory - and thus illustrates the "princely universe" of the Esterházy family in a very entertaining way. Numerous photos after the major renovations of recent years and previously unknown drawings from the princely archives show the Forchtenstein bulwark in all its baroque colourfulness.
