In 1714 the English Parliament offered a reward of twenty thousand pounds in gold (the equivalent of 10 million euros) to anyone who discovered how to determine the longitude of a ship in the ocean. Famous astronomers such as Galileo, Cassini, Huygens, Newton and Halley had in the past searched in vain for a solution by turning to the moon and the stars. The stakes stimulated others to make proposals. It was a self-taught watchmaker, the Englishman John Harrison, who found the solution: it was enough for each ship to be equipped with a chronometer capable of always marking the "exact" time, that of London, for example, and a simple comparison with the local time would immediately give the ship's longitude. This book is the adventurous story of the forty years of effort that it took for Harrison not only to build and perfect that chronometer, but to persuade the scientific community of the effectiveness of his method.
