(began as an apprentice watchmaker; studied horology at Bradford Technical Coll. where he was awarded a gold medal and a British Horological Institute prize for the national exams; elected to Fellowship of the Institute; gained history degree with the Open Univ. and teaching qualifications at Cambridge; taught history for 20 years before returning to horological conservation; winner of the 1994 Artist Craftsman competition of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and is closely involved with ICON (Institute of Conservation); he is one of ten horologists who have gained accreditation with the Institute as professional conservators and the only member specializing in chronometer work)
