"Majestueuse? Austère? Désuète? Mythique? La pendule dite « neuchâteloise » est une pendule très largement diffusée, qui orne bon nombre d'intérieurs, d'appartements, de salles et de salons officiels bien au-delà des frontières cantonales neuchâteloises. Objet familier et courant, facilement reconnaissable dans sa forme classique, la pendule neuchâteloise est un objet identitaire, alchimie de savoir-faire techniques et esthétiques. Les familles d'horlogers les plus célèbres sont associées à cette pendulerie : Jaquet Droz, Courvoisier, Robert, Billon, Ducommun. Un siècle après la publication par Alfred Chapuis de son Histoire de la pendulerie neuchâteloise, alors que les regards des manufactures, des médias et des amateurs d'horlogerie sont tournés vers la montre connectée et ses potentielles conséquences économiques, sociales et culturelles, la pendule paraît bien loin des préoccupations, comme définitivement enterrée. Faut-il pourtant mettre un voile sur cette histoire? La pendule neuchâteloise ne constituerait-elle pas un cas à étudier de plus près pour questionner et comprendre le cycle de vie d'un produit, les raisons d'un déclin ou d'une renaissance? Comment se fait-il que le savoir-faire neuchâtelois dans le domaine de la pendulerie, reconnu de par le monde au xvıııe siècle, soit pratiquement absent de la production horlogère industrielle contemporaine, et que seuls quelques rares artisans entretiennent encore cette tradition au travers de la restauration? Cet ouvrage prolonge l'exposition La neuchâteloise, présentée de façon complémentaire et simultanée au Musée d'horlogerie du Locle - Château des Monts et au Musée international d'horlogerie de La Chaux-de-Fonds. Il propose une lecture actuelle de la pendule neuchâteloise par des questionnements contemporains : quelles sont les spécificités techniques et esthétiques d'une pendule neuchâteloise? Comment s'est-elle imposée dans ses formes caractéristiques? Qui sont les acteurs de cette renommée? Quelles sont les causes de la disparition de cette industrie au xıxe siècle? Comment et sous quelles formes la pendule neuchâteloise parvient-elle à rencontrer les faveurs du public au xxe siècle? Qu'en reste-t-il aujourd'hui?"--Back cover. |
